Final ESIA Report for Lingoni Irrigation Scheme

This is an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report for the
construction of 189 hectares of Lingoni Irrigation Scheme located in Traditional
Authority (TA) Chamba in Machinga District. The proposed irrigation scheme is
situated below the south-western foot slopes of Chikala Hills in Machinga
District, about 16.5 km east from Namwera Turn-off on M5 Road. The project is
expected to cost approximately One million and Nine Hundred Thousand United
States Dollars (1,900,000 USD). About 100 people are approximated to be
employed during the construction phase of the project. Lingoni Irrigation Scheme
project is being implemented by the Government of Malawi, through the
Department of Irrigation (DoI) under Programme for Rural Irrigation Development
(PRIDE) and Enhancing the Resilience of Agro-ecological Systems Project
(ERASP). The irrigation scheme is expected to benefit 1,200 farmers from
surrounding villages.
